Tornadoes

Tornadoes is a 32 page book that explains how tornadoes are formed, why and when they are most likely to occur, how scientist classify and track them, and what to do if one touches down. Simon also details some of the major tornadoes recorded in the US and includes weather maps and diagrams. This is a lower level book that is a great tool to use with my LEP students and my struggling readers when teaching about weather.

            When studying weather in the classroom, this book will be an effective tool for my struggling readers. This is a book that they can take home and used as supplemental reading to the text. The reading strategies in this book make comprehension less of a struggle for my LEP students.

National Geographic Magazine

National Geographic Magazine is a great tool to use in the classroom. The scientific based magazine is a plethora of information for both life and physical sciences. I would like to use this magazine as a learning tool to further engage my students. I plan on assigning once a quarter a writing assignment of their choice. The students may pick an article of their choosing out of the National Geographic Magazine and write a one page essay on what they read. They then must answer the following questions: Why did you pick the article; what is the article about; how does the article relate to science. By doing this, I hope to broaden the scientific knowledge of my students in a less threating manner. They will have control of what they read and what they write about. I will not be grading the assignment on grammar, but on comprehension of their article.

 

"Roy G Biv”

Roy G Biv is a song about the colors of the spectrum that would be a fun tool to help teach students. The song was first recorded in 2009 by the group called They Might Be Giants. The song goes:
